Sharing: A Short History of Data

As data explodes, this articles looks at how networks working behind the screens have evolved to enable data sharing at scale — and the implications of this for the way data is shared and consumed in future.

The Basics: HTTP

From the late 1980s, Sir Tim Berners Lee's 'World Wide Web' allowed nodes to transfer information between computers, enabled by standardized protocols following common rule sets. The chosen protocol was HTTP. Key to this protocol, relevant to data sharing, is the fact that HTTP follows a request-response model.
